Choose a T-Ball bat for a young player's first swings from a tee. Start with the bat and ball combination permitted by your program, then compare manageable lengths and weights. The right choice should let the player practice comfortably with equipment intended for this introductory stage.
Read the barrel markings and product instructions before buying. Under the USA Baseball tee-ball standard, certified bats are labeled for use with approved tee balls. A T-Ball bat should not be assumed suitable for regulation hard baseballs just because it looks similar to another youth bat.
If your program uses coach pitch or machine pitch, check both its rules and the model's permitted use. Permission to use a tee-ball bat in those formats can depend on the use of approved tee balls. Review the bat again when your child changes divisions or ball types.
Use the manufacturer's size chart as a guide, taking the child's height, strength and experience into account. Avoid choosing solely by age or buying the longest model to allow for growth. Compare the actual weight as well as the length.
Drop is weight in ounces minus length in inches. A 25-inch bat weighing 13 ounces has a drop of -12. The number is useful for comparing weight at the same length, but it does not replace checking the child's control and comfortable grip.
Find appropriate tee balls and practice balls by checking each listing's specification. For head protection, compare children's batting helmets by measured head size. When moving beyond tee play, explore baseball bats with the next division's requirements in mind.
