About the category Firstbase Gloves
Find a first base mitt for receiving throws, handling short hops and fielding around the bag. Start with the sport and your throwing hand, then compare size, pocket and hand fit. A first base mitt has a specialized shape for the position, so choose it for how you play rather than simply looking for the largest glove.
Choose the correct throwing hand
- Right Hand Throw (RHT): you throw with your right hand and wear the mitt on your left.
- Left Hand Throw (LHT): you throw with your left hand and wear the mitt on your right.
The choice follows your throwing hand, not the side you bat from. Check the full hand designation on the product page rather than relying on the photograph.
Baseball or softball, and which size?
Choose a model intended for the ball you use. Compare the manufacturer's size guide, pocket design and hand opening. A listed measurement in inches helps compare models, but it does not tell you how snugly the mitt fits your hand.
For younger players, check whether they can open and close the mitt comfortably. If you are replacing an existing mitt, compare its size and pocket with the new model. Avoid assuming a larger mitt will automatically make receiving throws easier.
Compare construction and preparation
Review the web, lacing, materials and any fit adjustments described for the model. Some mitts arrive relatively supple; firmer leather models need more break-in time. Plan this before your next game and follow the manufacturer's preparation instructions instead of forcing the leather into shape.
Complete your first base setup
Confirm your competition's rules on position-specific mitts, and use the product for its intended role. For catching behind the plate, browse catcher's mitts. Compare other positions in baseball and softball gloves, and find glove care and accessories for maintaining the leather and lacing.
