Outfield gloves combine reach with a pocket suited to receiving fly balls and fielding balls in the gaps. Whether you play left, centre or right field, look for a glove that feels secure when you extend your arm and remains easy to close.

Balance reach with control

Outfield patterns are typically longer and have deeper pockets than infield patterns. However, the largest glove is not necessarily the best fit. A player who struggles to close or move a glove may be better served by a more manageable pattern. Compare wrist fit and finger space as well as the listed length.

  • Baseball or softball: check the intended sport and pocket design against the ball used by your team.
  • Throwing hand: select RHT if you throw right-handed and wear your glove on the left; select LHT for the opposite setup.
  • Web and pocket: compare how the model is shaped and how comfortably you can receive and release the ball.
  • Player fit: youth and smaller-hand patterns can differ from adult models even when their listed lengths are similar.

Prepare your glove for the season

Allow time for any break-in specified by the manufacturer. Practise catching and transferring with your chosen model before using it in a game, and check the laces regularly.
