Protective Masks

Defensive face masks should be selected for the specific sport and fielding role stated by the manufacturer. Check the intended use before comparing the frame, padding and fit; a softball fielding mask is not automatically suitable for baseball.

Fit and visibility matter

Follow the model's sizing guide and adjustment instructions. Check how the mask sits while looking ahead, down and to either side in a normal fielding stance. The frame, padding and straps should remain in their intended positions without improvised changes.

• Sport and role: confirm that the model is designed for the ball and type of play involved.
• Size: compare actual measurements rather than relying only on youth or adult labels.
• Configuration: check the included padding, straps and any restrictions on accessories.
• Competition: confirm the applicable requirements before using the mask in a game.

Choose the correct type of face protection

A defensive mask has a different purpose from a catcher's setup or a batting-helmet attachment. Compare catcher's gear and batting helmet accessories for those uses. Inspect the mask regularly and follow the manufacturer's cleaning and replacement guidance.
