Baseball and softball cleats should suit the surface you play on, the rules you play under and the shape of your feet. Choose the outsole first, then compare fit and construction for your regular training and match routine.

Match the sole to the venue

Moulded cleats, metal cleats and turf footwear have different intended uses. Check the exact product description and the venue's footwear policy. Do not assume metal cleats are permitted for a youth competition or suitable for an artificial surface; rules and surface requirements vary.

Check fit beyond the size label

• Measurements: use the brand's chart and confirm whether the listing uses youth, men's or women's sizing.
• Width and hold: look for comfortable toe room and a secure heel without excessive pressure.
• Playing socks: assess the fit with the socks you intend to wear.
• Construction: compare flexibility, upper material and fastening; collar height alone does not guarantee ankle protection.

Prepare for regular use

Follow the manufacturer's cleaning and drying instructions and inspect the sole and upper for wear. Remove dirt after play rather than storing footwear wet inside a bag. Compare playing socks and equipment bags when planning your complete kit.
